Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Aldinga Beach Primary School we structure our approach to behaviour using Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). PBL is an evidence-based, proactive approach aimed at creating a positive school environment. It focuses on teaching students the behaviours we want to see, rather than simply responding to undesired behaviours. Through PBL, we encourage good behaviour by recognising and reinforcing it, ensuring that our children understand what is expected of them and feel supported in meeting those expectations.

Teaching Positive Behaviours

Just as we teach academics, we teach behavioural expectations in a systematic way. This means students will have clear understandings of how they should behave in different settings, be it in the classroom, playground, or out in the community. We have developed a Behaviour Matrix which is distributed to all classes that outlines the behaviour expectations at ABPS. This matrix details what is expected of ABPS students in alignment with our school values of Kindness, Respect and Integrity. Teachers teach specific lessons regarding these expectations and regularly revisit the concepts taught to reinforce what is expected.

Consistency

Interoception is explicitly taught daily, to all students, in all classes and develops students’ ability to recognise and respond to internal body signals in an appropriate manner. This can also be incorporated into the Health Curriculum and Child Protection Curriculum.

Recognition and Reinforcement

When students display positive behaviour, they will be recognised and positively acknowledged through specific positive feedback related to the desired behaviour they have displayed. Students may also receive one of our Values Tokens as a minor celebration of the positive behaviour. Values Tokens are collected on a class and school wide level resulting in class and whole school rewards when enough tokens are collected. This positive reinforcement motivates students to continue behaving well.

Data-Driven Decision Making

We track behavioural data to ensure our strategies are effective and to make informed decisions about any necessary adjustments. Data also supports us to provide students with the necessary interventions to support behavioural improvement.

We believe that through PBL, we are setting our students up for success both in school and in life. By learning how to behave effectively, our children will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of the world, building skills that last a lifetime.
